1.3.6 M-code Assistance
M-codes are used by the CNC to request the execution of machine
auxiliary processes. An example is stopping the machine at the end of
a part program. Just like the other commands we have developed, M-
codes can be inserted directly into the part program by using the
editor screen; or the user can use the “M-Code Assistance.” To select
M-Code Assistance press the “M CODE” soft-key on the display unit.
This will display the M-Code help menu.
The M-Code menu display is similar to the G-Code menu display.
The total number of help pages and the current page are displayed at
the top of the screen. The M-Code menu display is manipulated in a
similar way to the G-Code help display. The user controls the
displayed page of the help screen by using the Page-Up and Page-
Down cursor keys on the MDI key panel. This menu display is also
“circular” in that attempting to advance past the last page returns the
user to the beginning, and visa-versa.
In our example, we want to insert an optional process into our part
program. So, we would page through the M-code help menus to find
the entry we are looking for. On the first page is an entry called “M01
OPTIONAL STOP”. By typing “1” and then pressing the “INPUT”
key on the MDI key panel, the help text for this M-code appears. The
user will notice that, even though the “GRAPH.” key remains
displayed, it is grayed to indicate that it is not available.
