The protection mode defined by IEC34-5 is as follows:

IPx5 : Machine tool protected against water spray
Water, sprayed randomly onto the machine tool through a
nozzle, must not adversely affect the operation of the machine
tool.
The IPx5 mode test conditions are as follows:
• Inner nozzle diameter 6.3mm
• Volume of water 12.51/min
• Water pressure at nozzle 30kPa
• Injection time per unit surface area (1 m
2
) 1 minute
• Minimum test time 3 minutes or more
• Distance between nozzle and machine tool About 3 m
WARNING
As described above, IPx5 evaluates a machine tool
by means of a short-term test using water,
assuming that the machine tool is dried after being
sprayed with water. Note that the use of a liquid
other than water or the continuous application of
water, such that the machine tool is not allowed to
dry, can adversely affect the machine tool even if
the other aspects of the test are less severe.
